StormQuant Deploys BAT Series Radar

This week the StormQuant team installed its advanced, BAT series radar in Bloomingdale, Georgia. This community is adjacent to the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, a key transportation hub serving the Southeastern United States. The airport supports a wide range of commercial passenger and cargo operations. Its strategic location and increasing traffic volume make operational resilience a top priority—especially in the face of extreme weather.

Similar to the deployment at Vance AFB in Oklahoma, StormQuant is utilizing a mobile tower. This allows for rapid setup and operational readiness without the extended timelines typically required for large-scale fixed infrastructure. Installation takes less than 4 hours from radar positioning to production of actionable weather data. The radar deployment was facilitated by Dustin Hetzel of the Savannah Airport Commission and is being coordinated by Ferman Tyler, Bloomingdale Fire Chief / EOC Director. With both the StormQuant hardware and software in place, the region can fully experience the benefit of the platform’s capabilities.

The StormQuant platform stands apart with an integrated approach combining proprietary radar hardware with patented 3D meshing software. Unlike traditional radar systems that prioritize horizontal scanning, StormQuant’s proprietary radar technology is engineered for rapid sector scanning in both horizontal and vertical planes. Conventional radars are not designed to capture Range Height Indicator (RHI) sector volumes. The BAT series, however, is built for this. Its unique, patented architecture removes legacy radar limitations, making it a powerful tool for detecting early signs of tornadic activity formation.

Training Conducted Ahead of Radar Deployment

In May, StormQuant hosted EOC team training at Bloomingdale Fire Station in preparation for the local radar deployment. The session was well attended by representatives from the Savannah Airport Commission, Chatham County Emergency Management, Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, and fire personnel from Bloomingdale, Port Wentworth, and Garden City.

The training focused on utilizing the StormQuant Weather Viewer from an emergency management perspective. Participants received hands-on instruction covering system navigation, operational workflows, and alert configuration. They created and activated three operational alerts for the local area, focused on damaging wind, heavy rain and thunderstorm, and flash flood potential. The interactive discussion generated valuable feedback and highlighted areas of interest including local geo-fencing, river gauge integration, lightning data integration, and inundation mapping.

Radar Installation Builds Upon Ongoing State Engagement

Georgia has a long history of extreme weather, and the threat remains significant. In 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 2 storm, causing 37 deaths statewide and underscoring the vulnerability of Georgia’s coastal communities. Having access to StormQuant’s radar and Weather Viewer makes a real difference when decisions are being made about warning dissemination, staging resources, shelter operations, and evacuation planning.

Last September, StormQuant installed Weather Viewers at both the Glynn County EOC and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. StormQuant’s successful collaboration with the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) laid the foundation for its expansion into Georgia.

In February, StormQuant met with key members of the Georgia General Assembly, building upon its prior meetings with the Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency. The briefings introduced our advanced 3D weather platform and encouraged deployment of StormQuant’s proprietary weather radar platform to strengthen the state’s emergency management and disaster preparedness capabilities. These discussions focused on how StormQuant’s advanced radar technology can provide enhanced situational awareness, improve severe weather detection, and support faster, more informed decision-making for emergency managers across Georgia.
