We are excited to announce the completion of the installation of the third X-band radar for the Florida Department of Emergency Management. The three radars are located at Everglades City in Collier County, Bunnell in Flagler County, and Ocala in Marion County. The Everglades City location is a temporary site. The radar will be moved to a permanent home along the Collier County west coast once a site is secured. Each radar complements the existing National Weather Service and Federal Aviation Administration Radar infrastructure. They do so by providing previously unobtainable information in data gapped areas of the current infrastructure’s blind regions. The goal is to create an improved understanding of the rapidly changing environment allowing weather forecasters, emergency managers, and first responders to react more quickly and more decisively to protect resources, property, and lives.
